Abuse -
the use of something, whether alcohol, drugs or sex, in a way which is considered to be incorrect or inappropriate. To maltreat.
Achluophobia -
fear of darkness.
Acrophobia -
an abnormal fear of heights.
Addiction -
to be physically dependent on something such as tobacco. An overpowering need with physiological cravings.
Agoraphobia - fear of being in places or situations that may be embarrassing or from which escape may be difficult. Fear of leaving a safe place.
Allergy - an adverse immune reaction to a protein or allergen in the environment that is normally harmless to the non-allergic individual.
Amaxophobia -
fear of driving or riding in vehicles.
Amnesia -
the conscious forgetting of information. Having no conscious recollection of an experience or event.

Anorexia Nervosa -
an eating disorder that, like Bulimia, is psychological in origin. A disorder characterised by deliberate attempts to lose weight, usually by voluntary starvation, but also by inducing vomiting, using laxatives and exercising excessively. An intense fear of becoming fat and an excessive desire for thinness.
Anxiety (anxious) -
a state of apprehension, uncertainty and fear resulting from the anticipation of a threatening or negative event or situation, often impairing physical and psychological functioning and reasoning.
Apiphobia -
(also Melissophobia) irrational fear of bees.
Arachnophobia -
irrational fear of spiders.
Associated -
experiencing an event from within one's own body thus experiencing feelings connected with the event. For example, seeing a memory looking through your own eyes as if you are there rather than seeing yourself in the memory. Opposite of dissociated.
Autophobia -
irrational fear of being alone or by oneself.
Aviophobia or Aviatophobia -
irrational fear of flying.

Behaviour -
to act, function or respond in a specified or usual way. All our behaviour is unconsciously carried out. Behaviour is programmed by our beliefs and values.
Brontophobia -
irrational fear of storms.
Bruxism - teeth grinding -
the grinding or clenching of the teeth, usually done unknowingly whilst asleep.
Bulimia -
an eating disorder that, like anorexia nervosa, is psychological in origin. Bulimia or binge eating means eating large amounts of food in short periods of time. After bingeing, the person will make themselves vomit and then often fasts.
CBT -Cognitive Behavioural Therapy -
a form of psychological therapy that focuses on directly modifying both cognitive processes and behaviour thus resulting in modifying the emotional state.
Claustrophobia -
irrational fear of confined or small spaces.
Clinical hypnosis -
(clinical hypnotherapy) refers to both the diagnosis of problems and the application of hypnotherapeutic approaches to treat patients within a clinical framework.

Congruence -
when goals, values, thoughts, behaviours, the conscious and unconscious minds are in rapport or agreement.
Conscious mind -
the mind you 'think' with and 'make sense' of things with. It is the part of your mind that you are aware of right now, which is awake, and sleeps at night when you then become 'unconscious'. It is the logical mind that makes rational decisions and connects you with your reality. Your conscious waking mind is like the tip of an iceberg. Your conscious mind is what is seen, but like an iceberg the larger part is underneath the water, which you are unaware of. This larger, hidden part is the unconscious mind.
De-hypnotise -
to awake from the hypnotic state, to break a hypnotic state, to break or stop a trance, as in 'de-hypnotising yourself from cigarettes'!
Demophobia -
irrational fear of crowded places.

Depression -

Desensitisation -
to 'flatten' the emotional content of memories or associations in order that the person can remember or encounter an experience without negative emotions.
Direct (direct phobia) -
pertaining to a particular, explicit or defined thing.
Disorder -
an upset or disturbance in health, psychological or physiological.
Dissociated -
experiencing an event from outside one's own body thus not associated to feelings. For example, seeing yourself in a memory rather than looking through your own eyes. Opposite of associated.
Dyslexia -
a learning disability also accompanied by a reading or writing disability. Characterised by impaired word recognition and reading comprehension difficulties.
EMDR -
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing - a process developed to help clients process traumatic memories and events unconsciously. Modelled on REM (rapid eye movements during sleep) which facilitates left-brain, right-brain hemisphere processing. These events can include experiences such as sexual or emotional abuse. The intense feelings that result from these types of events can become 'locked' in the nervous system and later produce symptoms of fear, anxiety, sadness and anger. It is a profound tool for rapid change.

Habit -

Trichotillomania is a term coined by a French dermatologist in 1889 to describe the compulsion or urge he saw in his patients to pluck out their hair. The word trichotillomania is derived from the Greek thrix, hair; tillein, to pull; and mania, frenzy.
Hemaphobia -
irrational fear of blood.
Heterophobia -
irrational fear of the opposite sex.
Holistic -
in a therapeutic setting, treating the whole person, psychologically, physically and spiritually in a rounded way. Treating mind, body and spirit.

someone who guides another person into hypnosis.
IBS - Irritable Bowel Syndrome -
a medical condition characterised by symptoms of abdominal discomfort or pain, bloating and altered bowel functions such as constipation or diarrhoea which are reoccurring.
Impotence -
the inability to maintain or acquire an erection in order to have sexual intercourse.
Incongruence -

sometimes experienced as an unpleasant, illogical or irrational thought which intrudes into a person's mind, despite resistance by the person who recognises the thought as pointless or senseless, but cannot seem to stop the process. Sometimes obsessions can be experienced as pleasant for the person. Obsessions may be accompanied by compulsive behaviours.
OCD -
Obsessive compulsive disorder - an anxiety disorder where the person feels 'compelled' to perform, function, think, behave in a certain way. Characterised by a pattern of repetitive thoughts and behaviours that are illogical and distressing.
Ophidiophobia -
irrational fear of snakes.
Ornithophobia -
irrational fear of birds.
Panic attacks -
a panic attack is the result of a high peak of anxiety. Experienced as intense terror or overwhelming fear that comes upon a person expectedly. These attacks are related to our instinctive and primal 'fight or flight' mechanism. In a 'fight or flight' response the body begins to react to the perceived or real threat by arming the body ready for attack. With panic attacks, the threat is perceived and not real.
Perception -
an individual's interpretation of the world and one's experiences which is coloured by that person's model of the world and past experiences. A person's internal understanding and experience of something.
Personal History -
a detailed record taken by the Therapist of the client's physiological, psychological and emotional history of experiences and memories as well as any unresolved issues.
Phagophobia -
irrational fear of eating or swallowing.
Phobia -
an intense, irrational and unconscious fear of an object or situation so extreme that a person feels compelled to avoid it, despite the conscious awareness and reassurance that it is harmless or safe.
Physiological -
relating to that of the physical and functioning body.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) -
a disorder that can occur following the experience or witnessing of life-threatening events such as natural disasters, terrorist incidents, serious accidents, military combat or violent personal assaults or traumatic experiences. PTSD sufferers often relive the traumatic experience through nightmares and flashbacks and the associated feelings are as strong as the original experience.
Psychoanalysis -
based on the observation that individuals are often unaware, or unconscious, of many of the factors that govern their emotions and behaviours. Psychoanalytic treatment highlights how unconscious factors affect current relationships and patterns of behaviour, traces them back to their root causes and helps the individual to deal better with current situations.
Psychological -
that pertaining to the mind, the mental make-up, the processes and strategies of the mind. Having no 'real' or objective basis but that arising from the mind.
Psychotherapeutic -
the use of Psychotherapy and its benefits. See psychotherapy.
Psychotherapist -
a qualified Therapist who practices psychotherapy, exploring behaviours, attitudes and habits in order to develop conscious understanding of the root causes and to develop resources for the client.
Psychotherapy -
a term used to describe a form of treatment based on dialogue and exploration with a Therapist. Psychotherapy aims to relieve distress by discussing and expressing feelings to help the person arrive at conscious understanding of root causes in order to help change attitudes, behaviours and habits and to develop resources in order to cope.

Pyrophobia -
irrational fear of fire.
Rapid Eye Movement -
REM - this is an active period of sleep marked in humans by intense activity in the brain and rapid bursts of eye movements. REM sleep is when dreaming occurs.
Rapport -
where individuals recognise they are alike in some way which leads to a feeling of familiarity and warmth, bringing about trust and acceptance. Equally, this can relate to the rapport between conscious and unconscious minds where they are in agreement.
Reframing -
to imagine or suggest a different outcome of a past or current experience, in order to change one's perception and thus emotional content regarding the experience. To find a different meaning for an experience or situation.
Regression -
going back in time during hypnotic trance to remember past
experiences and replaying them in the imagination for therapeutic
purposes. Sometimes regression is spontaneous.
Root cause-
the catalyst for a problem, the origination of a problem,
the root of a problem or symptom. Root causes are often out
of the conscious awareness and hypnotherapy and Timeline Therapy
are excellent tools for uncovering the root cause.
Self-confidence -
to trust in oneself, have belief in one's abilities, self-assurance.
Self-esteem -
opinion of oneself.
Self-Hypnosis -
a self-induced 'trance' state. Beneficial for focusing the mind in a positive way, relaxation, goal-reaching, positive affirmations. See hypnosis.
Session -
the time spent between client and Therapist. An appointment between client and Therapist.
Shy bladder -
a fear or inability to use the toilet, especially public toilets or outside the home. See Urophobia.
Social Anxiety Disorder - Social Phobia -
an intense fear of social situations. The fear arises when the individual believes that he or she may be judged, 'put on the spot' or humiliated by others. The anxiety can be specific to one social situation or can be generalised.

pertaining to a particular, explicit or defined thing.

Stress -
the word originates from the Latin word 'stringere' which means to compress or to draw tight. This would be a good description of how some people experience stress - tight and compressed or pressured. When we perceive ourselves to be threatened in any way, the brain triggers the release of hormones such as adrenaline into the body. The body is then put on full alert, which, in turn, triggers our 'fight or flight' response which is necessary in a primal sense for our physical survival. However, when we are inappropriately stressed, or continuously stressed, this has a detrimental affect on us emotionally, psychologically and physically.
Subconscious mind - or unconscious -
the mind which is the seat of our imagination, memories, emotions, dreams, behaviours, creativity and which takes care of numerous functions without conscious awareness, such as breathing or walking. Our sub/unconscious mind is the larger part of an iceberg, that which is deeper and larger than the tip, which is the conscious mind.
Suggestion -
the process of presenting a new or different idea to another person in order for that person, in a therapeutic setting, to change their behaviour or think differently.
Suppression -
an unconscious prohibiting, holding back or restraining of ideas, memories or desires sometimes as a result of unresolved emotional issues.
Symptoms -
indications or effects of a problem or issue. For example, a symptom of a panic attack could be experiencing palpitations. This is not the 'cause' of panic attacks, but a symptom.
Equally, the panic attack may also be a symptom of another (root) cause.
Teeth grinding - Bruxism -

the word 'tinnitus' means 'tinkling or ringing like a bell' (Latin origin.) It is a condition in which noise or sound comes from inside the ear rather than externally. These sounds may include humming, buzzing or hissing. It may be constant or intermittent.
Tobacco Trance -
the term Angela Jullings uses for the 'trance' you are in as a smoker regarding cigarettes.
Trance -
trance state or hypnotic trance - an altered state of functioning where the conscious mind's attention is focused or busy, very much like when at the cinema and one is not aware of the surroundings, only the film.
Trauma -
